A recent LA Times article points out that doctors are dealing with new business models. What it doesn’t explore is what these models require and whether physicians are prepared to succeed.
The August 31, 2014 article points out new challenges and a changing landscape. Some physicians are shifting to concierge practices, while others are facing more complexity and financial pressures in private practice. Some in private practices are leaving altogether, for employment with healthcare systems.
Those moving to employment models, particularly, may be facing new expectations. The ability to successfully treat and manage patients is still the primary responsibility. New treatment delivery and payment models mean that physicians need some level of business acumen, need to be better communicators and collaborators, and more effective leaders.
Unfortunately, medical schools may not have been altering their approach to prepare physicians. Hospitals and health systems are only recently realizing that they need to provide physicians with the resources to succeed.
