Employee Assessment: You could learn a lot from old movies and sports!

Everybody is faster. Have you watched sports lately? Have you noticed that everyone keeps getting faster, bigger, stronger? Records that seemed unbeatable 50 years ago are hardly significant today. I remember watching Ray Guy punt a football in the 1970’s. He would blast it 40, 50 and 60 yards with great hang time. No one could even come close. Today, many punters can kick a football as far as Ray Guy with even better hang times. It is the same thing with movies. When I was a kid I saw the movie The Dirty Dozen. I was mesmerized by the action. Everything seemed so real to me. Recently, the movie was available through Netflix so I put it on for my kids.  After watching for 20 minutes my kids looked at me like I had two heads. They thought it was a joke, like a Saturday Night Live skit. The acting was over the top. The battle scenes were not realistic. The footage of explosions, guns being fired and soldiers fighting were not what I remembered. Even the music was overly dramatic and even corny. It was Hollywood on steroids. Compared to Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers or Platoon, it just did not measure up in terms of realism. It is not the director’s or actors’ faults. They did the best with what they had. But today, there is superior knowledge, technology and editing ability.

Hiring technology has taken the same path as the movies. Today, there are powerful tests, simulations and interviews available for all organizations. At the seminar, experts from successful companies will spend time discussing how these updates to hiring can make a difference in your organization.
