Maybe It's Time to Give Up the Resume: Hiring the RadioShack Guy for Your Next Job Opening

September 29, 2011
One of the problems we see in hiring in healthcare is the persistent over-reliance on the resume. We spoke yesterday with the president of a hospital division who told us about two directors hired in the past six months. One is exceptional. One is mediocre at best. Based on the resumes and her unstructured interview, she would have bet her life that the opposite would be true. In fact the poor performer's resume was stellar, with every indication that she had all the experiences to succeed.

Compare this with the head of food services for the same health system. This department had implemented a comprehensive selection system with a front end test getting at functional behaviors, and a structured behavioral interview program. She's been impressed by the quality of the candidates that make it to the interview. In fact, she recently hired a candidate that she admitted she never would have even interviewed under her old system. The candidate's most recent experience was at radioshack. He had no hospital or food service experience. He's a bit older than the candidates they usually see. His front end online assessment, however, showed that he had a great work ethic, attention to detail and was customer-focused. His interview revealed the same thing. He's turned out to be an outstanding employee.

The resume is simply not a reliable selection tool, but how many discussions do we have about where a candidate went to school or what hospital they worked at?  How many times are we surprised when they don't pan out?  This organization, on the other hand, has defined the behavior it needs and targets just those. In this case, the "Radioshack guy" was exactly what they wanted, in spite of what looked like a resume deficiency. Given the challenges we face, we simply cannot make the same mistakes over and over again.
