Prominent Children's Hospital Reduces Short-Term Turnover From 24% to Less Than 1%

- Comprehensive assessment solution targets culture and turnover -

Pittsburgh, March 8, 2011 -- Select International, a global provider of human resource assessment solutions, implemented a comprehensive selection approach with one of the nation's leading children's hospitals. The project's goal was to ensure a culture of patient-centered care and to reduce short-term turnover.

In the six months prior to the project, short-term turnover was 24%. In the first six months using the new approach, the hospital has lost only two of the 450 employees hired. This means a turnover cost savings estimated at $750,000 and the ability to create the type of staffing consistency that is critical to high-quality care and a patient-focused culture.

The solution was implemented at every level of the organization and used a coordinated application, online assessment and structured behavioral interview process. All were built around competency modeling emphasizing customer service, patient-focused care, empathy and compassion.

"This success illustrates, once again, that with the right hiring process, hospitals can improve the quality of hire while dramatically reducing turnover," said Kevin Klinvex, Executive Vice President and Co-founder of Select International. "Our systems enabled this hospital to focus on what it does best—provide superior care for its patients and their families."

By setting out to influence the organization's culture and improve the patient experience, the hospital is now attracting higher quality candidates, selecting candidates in a more effective way, and creating an environment where the individual members of the workforce can thrive. Select International's selection system will now be integrated with all other human resources functions including performance management and training and development, thereby embedding the organization's values into the entire workforce.
